Rome Area River Advocates (RARA) is an advocacy group dedicated to protecting and restoring the health of the Rome area’s rivers—Coosa, Oostanaula, and Etowah—along with our natural springs. We strive to reduce pollution, promote sustainable practices, and raise awareness to ensure these vital waterways thrive for current and future generations.

Data Centers

Microsoft’s planned $1 billion data center campus in Rome, Georgia, on Huffaker Road, raises concerns about potential environmental and energy impacts. The facility’s cooling systems could discharge heated water into local waterways, harming aquatic ecosystems, including fish and mussels, while its significant power demands may strain the regional power grid, potentially leading to increased reliance on fossil fuels and challenging the area’s energy sustainability.

County and City Commissions have plans for two more data centers for the area. Join us in the fight to say “NO MORE DATA CANTERS!”

Marathon’s River Bank Gas Station

The construction of a Marathon gas station along the Etowah River bank in Georgia raises significant concerns about potential environmental harm from runoff. Fuel spills, oil leaks, and other contaminants from the station could easily enter the river through stormwater runoff, threatening the aquatic ecosystem, including fish, mussels, and other wildlife.
